Department of Computer Science

The Computer Science Department is committed to being a model of creativity and technical leadership. Our faculty and staff are dedicated to providing our students with the best possible education by offering courses in the latest technologies and providing the attention and support that is needed to produce talented graduates in computer science and cyber defense education. Students will learn concepts in computer science and cyber education that will create a foundation for all future endeavors, whether in the work place or in an advanced degree program.

Programs of Study

The Department of Computer Science has three computer science degrees available to students.  A Bachelor of Science in Computer Science -- a student can pursue a Cyber Security specialization under this degree, a Master of Science in Computer Science --a student can pursue a Cyber Security Specialization or an Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Specialization  under this degree, and a Doctor of Science in Computer Science.


Bowie State University has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Higher Education since 1961.  The Computer Science undergraduate program is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. Our undergraduate curriculum is designed to meet their guidelines – and the recommendations from our External Advisory Board which guides the department in identifying skills students need to be competitive in today’s rapidly evolving information security field.  Our association with the External Advisory Board helps us to stay relevant in today’s global business environment.

The Master of Science in Computer Science program expands upon fundamental computer science concepts and their applications and the compatibility of this discipline with other disciplines such as Information Technology, Signal Processing, Biomedical Computing, Digital Systems, Scientific Computing and Robotics. Doctor of Science in Computer Science

Applicants must possess a baccalaureate degree in an appropriate scientific discipline, such as computer science, engineering, chemistry, physics, or mathematics. A GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the last 60 credit hours is preferred. Learn More

Computer Science Certificate Program

The Computer Science Certificate Program is a post-baccalaureate program designed to strengthen the expertise of professionals in key computer science areas. Graduates of the program will be better able to contribute to the increasingly technological work environment of the local economy. Students acquire direct experience with state-of-the-art hardware and software. Classes meet in the evening, and a student may take up to five years to complete requirements. Learn More
